Bookshelf Project
Crafting Your Own Wooden Bookshelf: A Step-by-Step Guide
Introduction:
Creating a wooden bookshelf is a rewarding DIY project that combines practicality with aesthetics. In this blog, I’ll share the process of making this wooden Sapele bookshelf, from selecting materials to the final finishing touches.
This was a project for my own personal use.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Design and Measurements:
The first step was deciding on the dimensions and design of the bookshelf. A few sketches were made and this was followed by a simple 3D model made on SketchUp.
2. Deciding on material
Once this was done it was time to select the wood that I would like to use for this project. Sapele was chosen for this bookshelf because of the interesting grain orientation and vibrant colour.
3. Measuring and Cutting the Wood:
The age old saying remains the same it’s best to measure twice and cut once so I was very diligent when it came to measuring and I did plenty of double checks. All of the Sapele planks that I bought were cut using a simple handsaw. Bandsaws, circular saws and jigsaws could all be used but they weren’t required here. I made sure the cuts were clean and precise for a professional look.
4. Assemble the Frame:
Once the pieces were cut to size it was time to create the joints for this bookshelf. I use a router for all of the housing joints. A chisel or router plane could also be used for this type of joint. Using a table saw is also an option for those of you who have access to one. Simply adjust the height of the blade to the depth of the recess you will need. I marked up where all of the shelves would go and then used the router to remove the material.
5. Attaching Shelves:
I made sure that the recesses I cut were slightly small just so there was a tight fit. I intended for this bookshelf to be flat pack to I needed the shelves to fit securely but loose enough for me to take apart when I needed to. No glue was used for this project.
6. Sanding:
To prepare the bookshelf for the finish I made sure to take care when I was sanding. I started with 60 grit and worked my way up to 600 grit.
7. Finishing:
For this bookshelf I used danish oil and put on two coats. The danish oil made the wood grain pop and the vibrant colour of the Sapele was brought out
8. Final Touches:
Once the finish was dry, I inspected the bookshelf for any imperfections. I made a few small touch ups where it was needed.
Conclusion:
This was one of my earlier projects that I made and it was very fun to come up with concepts and then physically build the bookshelf. The shelves fit perfectly and the decision to choose Sapele as the material was the correct one. I now look forward to reading all of the books that I will keep on this bookshelf.
